Legal Services

Barrister and solicitors

We kick it old school and believe in redundant file administration. When you work with us, you work with a solicitor, a lawyer who specializes in providing legal advice in areas of practice. In this capacity, we are your general legal counsel. We provide opinions, advice, and drafting services. If you need to litigate, your solicitor will work with a barrister, a lawyer who specializes in courtroom procedure and oral advocacy. Any litigation file will be administered by two lawyers, working in different specialized roles, to ensure that you are well represented. Our services are billed at hourly or fixed fee rates; corporate clients may also elect to retain us as general counsel using a general cash retainer.

Areas of specialization

Litigation involving complex legal questions, and/or the need for extensive research.

  • Corporate and commercial

We advise and represent corporate clients in a wide range of matters, such as contract disputes, intellectual property disputes, employment disputes, shareholder disputes, and commercial real estate disputes. Our capacity extends from providing advice general counsel to all stages of the litigation process, from pre-trial negotiations to trial and appeals. We offer strategic advice to businesses on legal matters to help them minimize risk and make informed decisions. This includes contract review and negotiation, regulatory compliance, risk assessment, and general legal counsel on various business transactions and operations.

  • Real property

Our solicitors help clients with complex property issues. We do not conduct property transactions; our practice instead focuses on resolving disputes about land or housing. These disputes can be as simple as a failed real estate transaction to multi-million dollar mortgage enforcement cases. Our solicitors also provide opinions about parties’ rights to property.

  • Contracts

Contract drafting and interpretation requires careful attention to detail and a mastery of language. Our solicitors provide both with a view to limiting clients’ liability. We are continuously honing our contract language database to provide clients with the latest and most effective language. If disputes arise, our solicitors and barristers are able to quickly opine about the merit of a dispute. Should litigation occur, we have some tricks to move the matter along in court.

  • Fraud or conduct resembling fraud

We investigate and prosecute civil claims for fraud or conduct resembling fraud, in whatever form such conduct takes. These cases often require coordinating investigators’ and expert evidence, while ensuring that a viable legal case exists. Our solicitors work within their fields of practice to coordinate investigations. Barristers work with the solicitors to prepare cases for court and, ultimately, trial.

  • Private act corporations

Private act corporations are created by private or special legislation to grant a privilege to a company. Many older corporations, like universities, religious institutions, and trading companies are incorporated by private or special legislation. We are familiar with the legislative process and legislative drafting conventions and can work with parliamentary counsel and Parliament or provincial legislatures to pass amendments or new acts of incorporation.

We do not, under any circumstance, take criminal, quasi-criminal, or family cases. We can, however, refer these matters to other lawyers.
